El Alamein (World War 2, 1 July 1942 to 2 November 1942)

About This Campaign

In June of 1942, it looked as if the Panzerarmee Afrika, under the command of “the Desert Fox”, Field Marshall Erwin Rommel could undo the Allied advance completely, capturing Cairo and the Suez Canal. The strategic value of the canal meant that the Allies had to avoid this at all costs and El Alamein held the key. In three battles from July to November, the Allies managed to turn the tide of the war in North Africa.

An unexpected attack by the 9th Division on Rommel’s northern flank in July was followed by Australian diversionary raids and heavy bombing of German supplies in response to Rommel’s offensive in August, and finally a successful Allied offensive from the end of October. The Panzerarmee was forced to withdraw, initially from El Alamein, and finally from North Africa altogether.
