Leading Aircraftman George William Cowin (Service No:76551) enlisted in the RAAF on 13 July 1942 at No 3 Recruiting Centre Brisbane as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Electrician, re mustered as Electrical Fitter. LAC Cowin served with RAAF Station Richmond, 6 Operational Training Unit (OTU), 6 Aircraft Depot and 40 Squadron, and was attached to 33 Squadron at Discharge on 25 March 1946.

George was born in Brisbane QLD in 1920, second of four children (and only son) of George William Cowin II (b1896 in Brisbane, QLD) and Dorothy Pearl Sewell (b1894 in Brisbane, QLD). George II and Dorothy married in 1917 in Dorset, England - George II was serving in the AIF. George II and Dorothy returned to Australia in 1919, and settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and George II became a partner with his father and brother in the family Carrier Business - GW Cowin & Sons. 

George Jnr joined the family transport business in 1936 as a Driver's Offsider and Yardman, and completed an apprenticeship as a Mechanic. In 1939 he married Lucy Bernice Hoppe (b1922 in Brisbane, QLD) and was a Mechanic with GW Cowin & Sons in 1942 when he enlisted in the RAAF. Following his Discharge, George Jnr and Lucy settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and George worked as a Mechanic, in 1950 establishing his motor repair business, then taking over the Golden Fleece Service Station in Aspley and later establishing a Car Sales Business. George died in 1989 and Lucy in 1996.
