Cpl. Eric Brook Carlin
Travelling Machinery Salesman - Woolwich Street, West Leederville
Killed in action, 3 September 1916 aged 30
Like most children at the time Eric went to school until age 14, then took up work as a clerk and messenger at the WA Government Railways. He later worked for the Sunday Times as a travelling machinery salesman and commercial agent. Eric was a single man, the youngest of five children. He fought in the trenches of France on the Western Front and was reported missing after the Battle of Moquet Farm. There were reports he'd been taken prisoner but no report of this was received by the Red Cross. In 1917, about a year after being reported missing, Eric's body was identified and his meagre belongings were returned to his parents. His gravestone at Pozieres British Cemetery reads "The Lord Gave and the Lord Taketh Away." |
