Description

Lignieres-de-Touraine is a village 22 kilometres south west of Tours and about 3 kilometres south of the village of Langeais. The Cemetery is situated south of the village on the road to Azay-le-Rideau and about 300 metres south-east of the church. The graves are west of the main entrance.

There are 15 Commonwealth war graves, all resulting from a single incident.

On 16 July 1944, two Lancaster aircraft, one of No. 467 Squadron RAAF, the other No. 207 Squadron RAF, crashed after one had been hit by flak and gone out of control. Fifteen airmen died in this crash and the people of the town of Azay-le-Rideau requested permission for them to hold a service for these men, after which they were buried in the local cemetery. When the war ended the townspeople requested that the bodies of the airmen remain there, rather than being reinterred in a military cemetery; they undertook to look after the graves and hold a memorial service annually." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
