Cemetery Details

Location Le Pont d'Achelles, Nord pas de Calais, France
Co‑ordinates N50.71512476, E2.81952636
Description

Pont d'Achelles is near the little town of Nieppe in the far north of France  just off the Motorway betweeen Lille  and Calais.

The cemetery location was behind what were the Allied lines in front of Messines for the attack which took place on 7 June 1917.  Pont  d'Acheles  was the site of a number of Field Ambulance detachments and Casualty Clearing stations, and the cemetery developed around them as wounded soldiers succumbed to their injuries while being moved back through the medical system.  The area was overrun during the March 1918 German offensive but regained once again in September 1918 in the Allied offensive that finished the War.
