Adelaide South Australian Railways WW1 & WW2 Honour Boards

Details

Location North Terrace - Adelaide Railway Station concourse north end, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
Type honour_board
Description

A spectacularly large series of four gloss finished wood panel Honour Boards in excellent condition upon which are inscribed the names of South Australian Railways employees who enlisted for service in both wars. Each panel contains eight columns of names. The WW1 names are not in alphabetical order whereas the WW II names are. The Boards are complemented by a large index of the WW1 names in alphabetic order to enable location of names on the main panels. They appear to record names in random order - but perhaps the order in which the men enlisted, or compiled from lists sent by outlying depots.. The expanse of these boards illustrates the size of SAR as a key organisation in the fabric of South Australian life, and as an employer at the time. One wonders how the railways continued to function with so many men joining the war effort directly. 3601 names are recorded.
