Description

Wooden Honour Board

Porcupine Ridge, an extremely patriotic and enthusiastic portion of the community, gives practical expression to its sentiments, as its contribution of both men and money for war purposes bears witness. Having regard to the number of men available in a small district, the enlistments in the fighting forces of the Empire are specially praiseworthy. To commemorate what local men have done (and some of them have been called upon to make the supreme sacrifice) a handsome Honor Board was unveiled in the Church on Monday, March 25, advantage being taken for the purpose during an interval in the Harvest Thanksgiving Social. The Board, covered with the folds of the Union Jack, occupied a prominent position in the neatly decorated church, amid wreaths emblematic of glory.

Prior to the unveiling, the Rev. S. H. McGowan paid an eloquent tribute to those whose names would appear on the Board, and thought it fitting that the ceremony should take place in a church at this season of the year when memory was full of the Redeemer's sacrifice. Those whom we honored were not merely people we had read about. They were our own kith and kin. Those who had walked the same roads and worked in the same fields with us. Our own, who had triumphed and covered our Australian name with glory and we treasured their memory. As the building was used also for the schoolroom, the speaker hoped that the children whose eyes rested during the interval of lessons upon this board would receive an inspiration to do noble deeds and live true lives. The audience then stood, while the Rev. S. H. McGowan, in a few impressive words, unveiled the Honor Board, and as the names of some who had fallen were disclosed, the audience remained standing with bowed heads. The names are F. Boyle, F. Poulter, W. Barlow, H. Poulter, H. Ford, W. Russell, J. Phillips, J. Russell.
