Description

A large concrete structure mounted on a three-tier brick and concrete sur-base. All details are in bronze. The pillars each have a plaque affixed to the front. On the left of the left pillar are three bronze wreaths; on the right of the right pillar are two bronze wreaths. A bronze plaque is set into the footpath in front of the structure on a large square pink tile. Inside the tile is a blue circle that has the insignia of the City Of Holdfast Bay. Below this is the title; Local Heritage Place.

WAR MEMORIAL. The original Arch of Remembrance was dedicted in 1926 as Brighton's World War OneMemorial. It was designed by J. D. Lyons of Prospectwho won a competition run by The Town of Brighton.Seriously damaged by storms in 1936, it was replacedin 1964 on the 49 thanniversary of the Anzac Landing.

Condition

Dedicated 21 November 1926. Rebuilt 1964

MAINTAINED BY: City of Holdfast Bay Council

PECULIARITIES/DAMAGE: The damaging storm to the original arch was in 1963, Plaque on arch indicates 1963, plaque in footpath indicates 1936, the footpath plaque is incorrect, Holdfast Bay Council was not aware of the error, corrective action is to be carried out.
