Description

Market Square, A 12 metre high monument comprising a 2.4 metre, 500-kilogram, bronze statue of a soldier in the "On Guard" stance, surmounted on the top of a capped column and a square pedestal that has protruding square corners with bronze wreath embellishments affixed. This in turn is mounted a three-tier sur-base and concrete slab. Bronze plaques are affixed to each face of the pedestal. The monument is enclosed within a low concrete fenced area.

Since its construction, the Memorial had incorporated two captured WW1 77mm German Field Guns. The story of the guns is detailed on a plaque near the base of the Memorial.

PECULIARITIES/DAMAGE:
1. Ribbon on the wreath of the South corner is broken off.
2. The East face is the front face yet the soldier is facing north.
3. The use of an ampersand on the main plaque to save space, yet the word "and" is spelt out lower down.
