The crew of Anson W2370 became disoriented with failing light and ditched into Lake Albert near Meningie. Eyewitness reports indicate that the aircraft did not sound as if it had any mechanical problems. As darkness increased the aircraft circled the lake and township several times before crashing into the lake.
Eyewitness:
He was flying around in the dark and we knew he was in trouble, the word quickly went out and we tried to get people to go to the paddock and switch on their vehicle lights, but owing to the blackouts on them it could not have been easy to see, we had no radio. I think he must have been running low on petrol because he seemed to become desperate; we had the lights of the town on so at least he could see them and kept well away and crashed into the lake, they were all killed. We searched all next day, the RAAF blokes and police came out.
