REPORTS:

Official: Summary:

1. Aircraft missing on non-operational navigation exercise.

2. At 0715 on the morning of Feb. 15. the crew of AW878 were briefed, and at 0800 hrs. took off to carry out a Radius of Action over the sea. No R/T from AW878 was heard at any period and at 1230 hrs., overdue signals were sent out. At 1300 hrs. a search was instituted for the missing aircraft and at 1430hrs. the searching aircraft sighted part of a mainplane on Lady Julia Percy Island. The search continued on the morning of Feb. 16, without result. Subsequently, wreckage was found in the sea which identified the aircraft beyond reasonable doubt.

SYDNEY MEMORIAL:

Panels are located at Sydney War Cemetery in the grounds of the Rookwood Necropolis. The panels are to recognise (amongst others) those who perished and their remains not recovered. The inscription on a continuous frieze on the memorial states:

1939-HERE ARE RECORDED THE NAMES OF THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO DIED IN EASTERN AND SOUTHERN REGIONS OF AUSTRALIA, ON LAND, AT SEA, AND IN THE AIR, BUT TO WHOM THE FORTUNE OF WAR DENIED THE KNOWN AND HONOURED BURIAL GIVEN TO THEIR COMRADES IN DEATH-1945
