Description

A granite ball is mounted on a polished grey granite capped tapered cylindrical column and pedestal that in turn is surmounted on a stepped and capped pedestal; this in turn is set on a red granite block with a four tier stepped base. On the face a bronze plaque is affixed to the pedestal cap and another on the pedestal base. On the red granite block are three bronze plaques. On the right face there is a bronze plaque on the capped pedestal. At the rear of the monument is a red granite wall and three flagpoles, on either side of the monument are curved red granite walls. On the left and right walls are listed campaigns that have involved Australian units; all details are in gold leaf.

The monument was dedicated on 21st April 1921; originally it was erected outside Government House in the now non-existent Liberty Square. It was relocated to the Civic Centre in 1970 and thence to its present location in Bicentennial Park in 1992. The present site was once the location of the 14th Anti-Aircraft Battery that were amongst the first to fire against the first Japanese aircraft raid in February 1942.
