Stories

A brief history of the Honour Board.

This Roll of Honor was made by Mr. Henry Davies, the Schoolmaster of the Reynella Primary School, in about 1926. It was hung in the School from that time until about 1970/1971 when, for reasons unknown, it was removed and placed in a storeroom to be disposed of at a later date. In 1983 a former student of the Reynella Primary School, Gavin Powell then aged approximately 13 years, would assist the school grounds man, Mr. Bill Morris, during school holidays to carry out his various duties around the school. On one occasion during this period Gavin saw the Roll of Honor in the grounds man’s shed along with other material that had been earmarked for disposal. Gavin asked Mr. Morris if he could have the Roll of Honor as he did not want to see it destroyed because of its significance. Mr. Morris gave the Roll of Honor to Gavin and he took it to his grandmother’s house in Corn Street, Old Reynella. Gavin’s grandmother is Margarette Powell, a well-known Reynella identity and historian who was born on 18/6/1923. In 1984 Margarette Powell donated the Roll of Honor to the RSL Morphett Vale and District Sub-Branch and it has hung in the hall ever since.
