Description

Grey granite obelisk

The Gilgai memorial for fallen soldiers was unveiled early in August 1923 by Mrs Woodford, who had two sons from that centre killed at the front. The Reverend E.H. Stammer delivered an address and noted that that this little centre sent every eligible man, totaling 79 to the war and of those 11 had been killed. The Lands Department dedicated half an acre of land to Gilgai village for the purpose of the memorial. (Sydney Morning Herald, 8 August 1923, ‘War Memorial, Inverell, Tuesday’, p. 14).

The Gilgai Public Hall and Recreation Reserves Trust took over care of the Gilgai Cenotaph Memorial in 2011. On 23 September the Trust received a 'Saluting their Service' grant to install memorial plaques for the: South African (Boer War), Korean, Malaysian and Vietnam War as well as one dedicated to Australian National Servicemen. It was installed in 2015 in time for the Anzac Day Commemorations.

Phoenix Foundry cast the plaques and they were installed by Inverell's Thorley and Sons. It is a mounted grey stone obelisk with veteran list for WW1 and WW2.
