Description

'The Barcaldine War Memorial Clock, a major regional memorial was unveiled on 21st May 1924 by the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Matthew Nathan. It was designed and executed by A L Petrie, monumental masons of Toowong, Brisbane at a cost of £524. The marble and granite memorial honours the 292 local men who served during the First World War, including the 38 fallen.'

The only war memorial of its type in Queensland. An ornate clock tower, 12 feet high, made of marble and resting on granite stepped base. Recessed plates of finer marble bear the leaded name of the 292 locals, who served in WWI. The lower section of the clock tower is ornamented with simulated masonry blocks. At the top is a 4-faced electric clock which is illuminated at night. Around the faces of the clock are carved laurel wreaths and foliage is carved in the lower corners of each face. The clock tower has a dome-shaped cap with a band of cable ornament. There is a leaded unveiling inscription of the lower step of the clock tower. The WWI memorial was damaged in a storm and the clocks were replaced late 1992.
