Description

Gilles St Primary School was built in 1889 to educate children living in the south east of the 'square mile' of Adelaide. This the demographics were such that a very large number of children educated in this school were of military age when WW1 broke out in 1914.

The original school Honour Board was made in 1917 and thus does not include a number of old scholars killed later in the war.

The school holds its original inspection and enrolment records and from these further entries of old scholars who enlisted in WW1 have been identified thanks to research by Paulene Thompson, and new Honour Boards created to accommodate them.

Not originally listed on the VWMA, work will now commence to capture the additional old scholars who were enrolled prior to WW1 who served in that conflict and who are now recorded on a series of new Honour Boards in addition to those on the original. June 2018
