Description

St Joseph’s Church was built in Gothic style by the parishioners in 1918-19. Building work on the church was begun in the final months of World War 1. The foundation stone was laid on 7th July 1918 by Dr O'Connor, Bishop of Armidale and the opening and blessing of the church was celebrated on 22nd June 1919. The building of the church at this time was a significant achievement for our parish.

Each Station of the Cross was donated by parishioners in honour of a soldier or soldiers from Gunnedah and surrounding areas who lost their lives during the war. There are fourteen Stations of the Cross in Catholic churches that commemorate Jesus' journey to Calvary in visual images such as paintings, reliefs or sculptures. The stations in St Joseph’s are painted reliefs.

Each Station of the Cross has an inscription honouring one or more soldiers. The inscriptions state who each station was erected by and then in whose honour it is erected and where and when they died.
