Type | memorial |
Description | Wall of Remembrance within the school with brass plaques A Laurimar school could be the first primary school in Australia to have an Anzac cenotaph built on its site. The Doreen-Diamond Creek RSL sub-branch has applied for funding from the federal Department of Veterans Affairs to install the memorial at Laurimar Primary School. Assistant principal Jason McBean said he was proud the cenotaph would be the first on a primary school site. “It will keep the Anzac spirit alive … our school wants the Anzac legacy to live on through our students,” he said. “The cenotaph will provide a central point in the community for our community to pay respect [to the Diggers] and will be a symbol of what we should stand for.’’ Mr McBean said the school had held an Anzac ceremony for the past five years and would again on Sunday, April 21 . Doreen-Diamond Creek RSL president John Langford said the club had applied for a $20,000 Veteran Affairs grant to build the cenotaph. The department is expected to announce grant recipients next week. The club would raise the rest of the $30,000 cost for the cenotaph. Mr Langford said the memorial would have a background wall including plaques of insignias of services, a flagpole and parade area. He said the club would launch a membership drive to attract more Doreen members. A World War I honour board that was held in trust by the Doreen CFA would be given to the RSL once clubrooms were found. Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green backed the cenotaph, saying the nearest memorial was 10 kilometres away.
