Description

The heroic female figure, ‘The Spirit of the Empire’ Calling the dominions to her aid in the fight she is about to enter upon, is centre piece of this monument dedicated to those from the district who served in World War One.
The bronze sculpture designed by Paul Montford is mounted on a granite base and pedestal, and is surrounded by a basalt wall.
The pedestal contains cast bronze plates on all four sides.
The front plate is inscribed; 'Erected in Honour of the men of this district who fell in The Great War 1914-1918 "Some of many who perished in vain As types of our chivalry"'
The right plate is inscribed; "Valour lives beyond the grave" and the name of those who fell.
The left plate is inscribed; "Love of Country has Triumphed" and the name of those who fell.
An addition place has been placed on the back of the pedestal listing the names of those who fell in the Second World War and 3 other small plaques, , One to commemorate 2 named soldiers from the Vietnam conflict, One to describe the Statue and third to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the original dedication.
The monument is located on the avenue of elms, facing Finlay Street at the town's centre.

Re-dedication to mark the 80th anniversary of the original dedication on 21 December, 1929.

This plaque marks the 80th anniversary of the original dedication of this memorial. The memorial is rededicated to the men and women of Camperdown and the surrounding district who have served in the defence of Australia and her allies in all conflicts.
