Description

Brass Plaque

The Chancellor, in a brief address, congratulated the State upon the fact that it had been possible to keep the University going, despite the devastations of the war. As many as 150 professors, lecturers, and students had gone to the war, and unfortunately the men whose names had been read had made the supreme sacrifice. They were the brave spirits who, steadfast and unafraid, had trod the path of duty till it led them to imperishable glory. Their names would be suitably inscribed upon, a memorial, and thus perpetuated for all time. They had sacrificed their lives, not for honour or self interest, but because they preserved the traditions attributed to their ancestors by Tacitus when he wrote: "They are brave but not quarrelsome ; they love their homes ; they hate despotism ; and they are devoted to freedom."
These men had obeyed the call of the blood, and had died like heroes.
