Smithfield War Memorial

Details

Location Anderson Walk, Smithfield, Playford - South Australia, Australia
Type memorial
Description

An inverted metal crusaders sword is mounted within a metal frame of a Cross of Sacrifice surmounted on a grey granite capped pedestal and three-tier sur-base and a concrete slab. Details on the face of the pedestal and the top tier are in gold leaf. A bronze plaque is affixed to the centre tier. The monument is enclosed within a post and chain fence. Originally the pedestal was surmounted by a white marble soldier standing at ease and located adjacent the Smithfield Institute at the corner of Anderson Walk and Queen Street. Due to vandalism the soldier was removed and replaced with the cross that was manufactured by students of the Elizabeth High School in 1980. It was then moved to Warooka Crescent near the Munno Para Library. In 2004 it was again moved to its present location at the Memorial Park, Anderson Walk.
