It was an unlikely friendship - a teenage high school student boarding in an Adelaide suburb, and a veteran of the Western Front in WWI. Susan Nicholls and Solomon William Jacobs met as neighbours in 1972, and forged a deep friendship that was to last until Mr Jacob's death in 1981. During these years, Mr Jacobs rarely talked about his WWI service apart from sharing a few light anecdotes. Susan knew that she would need to uncover the deeper story of her "adopted" Grandpa Jacobs' service in the Great War to understand what had shaped the man she knew, and explain the evident legacy of his war injuries.

The Private War of Solomon William Jacobs
is an "affectionate tribute to the honourable life and service of an 'ordinary' WWI survivor."

Please send RSVP for the launch via email to [email protected] and include "RSVP Private War" in the subject line of your email.

Sue has very generously offered to donate the proceeds from the sale of the book to the RSL Virtual War Memorial, and we are very proud and grateful that she has chosen us.
