Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Signalman Basil Robert Thomas Leach (Service No:B1952) enlisted in the RAN on 2 September 1939 as an Ordinary Signalman on HMAS Penguin. He was appointed Signalman in 1942 and was attached to HMAS Rushcutter when he was Discharged on 23 November 1945. His RAN Medical Report states that he suffered from chronic sea sickness.

Born in 1915 in Christchurch NZ, Basil was the eldest of four children of Edward Edwin Leach (b1888 in London, England) and Violet Adelina Pearl Crook (b1889 in Melbourne, Victoria). Edward (a Butcher) and Violet (a Saleswoman) married in 1915 in Christchurch NZ and lived there and in Auckland where Edward was a Butcher. In 1922 Edward and Violet travelled to England with their children, and on their return lived in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney where Edward was a Butcher.

Basil worked as a Car Cleaner in Brisbane QLD prior to his enlistment in the RAN. In 1943 in Sydney NSW, he married Eileen Dorothy Worrad (aka Dorothy; b1921 in Sydney, NSW) - Dorothy was working as a Machinist in Sydney. Basil and Dorothy settled in Sydney where Basil worked as a Salesman and Storeman. Dorothy died in 1982 and Basil in 2008.
