On the 23 Nov 1915 at the age of 23 he enlisted in the AIF 28th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement as a Private (Reg Number 3832, AWM Embarkation Roll number 23/45/3) His unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A28 Miltiades on 12 February 1916. Whilst he was away he transferred to the 51st Battalion. He returned to Australia 11 December 1918.
Daniel was permanently incapacitated by wounds received in the Great War.
