Daughter of Hilda Bessie RICHARDS, Rose Bay, New South Wales.
She was born in Leederville in Western Australia and is a veteran of the Second World War.
Before her war service, Pamela worked as a nurse. On 27 March 1944, she enlisted in the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS). Pamela passed her wireless transmitting test in March 1944 at HMAS Penguin in Sydney; then in April 1944 Pamela became a telegraphist at HMAS Harman in Canberra where she was part of the vital communications services for the Allied forces in the Pacific.
Pamela was discharged from the WRANS on 25 March 1946 and returned to nursing. At one stage, she sailed to the UK as a passenger and on return she was the ship’s nurse as payment for travel.
In 1952, Pamela married Edmund Burgoyne who had been a lieutenant in the Australian Army. The couple went on to have 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Edmund sadly passed away in 1978.
Besides raising her family, Pamela enjoyed playing tennis and was a wonderful quilter.
According to Pamela, having a good family has helped her reach the milestone age of 100.
