Winn Lockyer Reilly, born 13 March 1899, the son of Alfred James and Edith Emily Carol Reilly nee Potter, of Prospect Road Newtown Geelong.
Winn attended Geelong College for his schooling and later attended the Royal Naval College in London, graduating as Midshipman on 17 January 1917. On graduation, Winn was awarded the King’s Medal , awarded annually to the Cadet Midshipman of the senior year who in the opinion of the Captain is most suited to receive it. The medal was usually accompanied by a personally signed letter from the King.
It is believed that this was the first time that this award was received by an Australian.Winn served on ships in the North Sea and later passed his seamanship examinations for the rank of Sub-Lieutenant.
It was reported that he married Miss Naomi Clara Elizabeth Williams of Point Piper NSW in 1934 in Woollahra, Sydney.
Winn reenlisted for WW2 and finished the war with the rank of Commander, having served with Special Intelligence. He was supposedly in line to be the first admiral in the RAN but apparently declined the posting due to an accident on exercise when a sailor was lost overboard.
Winn died on 21 June 1978 in New South Wales.
