William (Bill) MILLAR

MILLAR, William

Service Number: 5374
Enlisted: 1 June 1916, William enlisted at Enoggera, (enlistment date is approx) but back in the day it was not called Enoggera. Will go back through my notes but believe it was called ?? Plains or ?? Paddock. There was a picture that showed it was basically a tent city with minimal grass and a few trees. Once he was assigned, he joined the 14th reinforcements of the 25th Battalion. His regiment's ensign/flag was Black over Blue on a diamond shape. *There was a book written about the 25th Battalion called "Black over Blue" Unfortunately, it is long out of print by now.

Biography contributed by Julie Parkinson

William was the eldest of 3 children. His siblings were a brother named Robert (b: 1897) and a sister named Katie (b: 1899) (our grandmother)

Born the son of Andrew MILLAR and Katie (nee Hinton) most of the children's early years were spent at Nudgee Orphanage in Brisbane when both their mother and the youngest son died in childbirth in 1902.

William was only 7 years of age at the time, and his father could not cope with the 3 youngsters and continue working to support his family.

At some point, William and his father reconciled, and he was working as a Green Grocer in Beaudesert before he enlisted.
