John Alexander Doig was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1878. John enlisted at Blackboy Hill on the 25.6.16, aged 38 years 2 months. He was an iron machinist and Presbyterian, who listed his previous service as Loco Volunteer. The Doigs are a well-known Western Australian sporting family, with many men playing in the Australian Football competition over the years. The Doig medal, presented each year to the fairest and best player with the Fremantle Dockers, is named after the family.

John was described as being 5 feet 6½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 37½ inches, fair complexion, blue eyes and black hair. Allocated Service number 2564, he was a Private with the 44th Infantry Battalion. Next of Kin was his wife Mary Fraser Doig who was living in Midland, then later in Fremantle. He embarked on A8 Argylshire from Fremantle on the 9.11.16. John was killed in action on the 31.7.17 near Gapaard Village, Messines, Belgium and buried near Gapaard. He is Memorialised at Ypres Menin Gate, Panel 27. Mary was buried at Fremantle Cemetery, Presbyterian EE 0842 and there is also headstone honouring him there.
