Corporal Harold Charles Atwell (Service No:37568) enlisted in the RAAF at No 2 Recruiting Centre Sydney as an Aircraftman I (mustered as Clerk General) on 30 June 1941. Described as 'a keen and bright type of Lad' (NAA), he was attached to No 2 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) Wagga and No 5 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) Uranquinty. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 4 October 1942, he was attached to No Fighter Sector (FS) New Lambton, No 3 Embarkation Depot (ED) Sandgate, and in the Northern Territory at No 5 Operational Base Unit (OBU) Birdum and No 5 Fighter Section Darwin. LAC Atwell served with No 2 Operational Training Unit (OTU) Mildura and RAAF HQ Records (Richmond) and was promoted to Corporal on 3 January 1947. In April he embarked from Sydney for Bofu, Japan and served in Japan with 81 Wing HQ before returning to Laverton. Corporal Atwell was attached to Laverton Transit Departure and Reception Centre at Discharge on 21 June 1948. LAC Atwell was one of six brothers (Maurice, Cliff, Albert, Walter and Cyril) who served in WWII.

Born in Rainbow, Victoria in 1918, Harry was sixth of twelve children of George Alfred Atwell (b1884 in Templars, South Australia) and Amy Eleanor Rogers (b1888 in East Cannum, Victoria). George (a Farmer) and Amy married in 1909 in Rainbow where they settled and raised their family and George was a Farmer.

Harry worked in Rainbow as a Farm Labourer, and when that work 'cut out' in 1938, headed for Leeton, NSW where he was working as a Labourer on wheat and fruit farms when he enlisted in the RAAF. Harry settled back in Rainbow, where he was a Labourer and Farmer. Harry died in 1990.
