Able Seaman Mark Lyle Archer (Service No:PM6669) - Cook - initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:V265338) with 37 Battalion from 17 December 1941 to 9 June 1942. Private Archer was Discharged as under-age (16 years 8 months), having given his DoB as 1923 - he was advised (NAA) that if he tried to enlist again giving a false DoB he would face civil action. He then enlisted in the RAN on 22 June 1943 on HMAS Cerberus - rated Assistant Cook. Able Seaman Archer was attached to HMAS Watson at Discharge on 11 June 1946.
Mark was born in Orbost, Victoria in 1925, sixth of nine children of Robert William Donnithorne Archer (b1885 in Bulumwaal via Bairnsdale, Victoria) and Alice Edith Lay (b1890 in Beaconsfield, Tasmania). Robert (a Labourer) and Alice married in 1912 in Orbost, where they settled and raised their family and Robert was a Labourer. The family moved to Maffra in the 1930s, where Robert (a Labourer) was killed in 1955 when he was hit by a car.
Mark worked as a Labourer, and in 1945 was in the RAN in Sydney NSW when he married Florence Rose King (b1922 in Sydney, NSW) - Florence had served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:Nf409141). Following his Discharge, Mark and Florence lived in Sydney, where Mark was a Labourer, before moving to Maffra, Victoria in the early 1950s, where Mark was Farmer. By the late 1950s Mark and Florence returned to Sydney, where they raised their family and Mark was a Baker. In the early 1970s the couple moved to Menindee in the Riverina, NSW - Mark was a Baker. Florence died in 1987 and Mark in 2001.
