Leading Aircraftman Raymond Frederick Stobie (Service No:158429) enlisted in the RAAF on 22 November 1944 at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Technician, re mustered as Fitter/Driver Motor Transport. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 22 December 1945, he was attached to No 1 Operational Training Unit (OTU) Nhill and 2 Airfield Construction Squadron. LAC Stobie was attached to Laverton Transit Departure and Reception Centre at Discharge on 19 June 1948. Brothers Eric and Aubrey also served in WWII.
Ray was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1926, youngest of five children of Albert Aurelius Stobie (b1888 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Victoria (Lily) Lillian Laughton (b1887 in Melbourne, Victoria). Albert and Lilly married in 1908 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Albert was a Clerk and Bookkeeper - and was a radio and theatre performer/comedian under his stage name Fred Champion.
Ray started work as an Assistant Projectionist at the Southern Theatre, worked as a Motor Mechanic for Lane's Motors, and was a Process Worker with Dominion Radion Pty Ltd in 1944 when he enlisted in the RAAF. In 1947 in Melbourne Ray married his first wife, Norma Myrtle Neal (b1927 in Melbourne, Victoria) and following his Discharge in 1948, Ray and Norma settled in Melbourne where Ray worked as a Mechanic. Ray and Norma divorced in 1956 and both remarried - Ray in 1959 to Jennifer Anne McPherson (b1935 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Jennifer worked as a Clerk in Melbourne. Ray and Jennifer settled in Melbourne, where Ray worked as a Driver until his death in 1973. Jennifer remarried, and died in 2022.
