A gold miner from the age of 16 in Cooktown, Queensland, Michael was the eldest of eight children of Patrick Flannery (born 1854 in Ireland) and Elizabeth Mary McCarthy (born 1865 in Ireland). Patrick and Elizabeth married in Cooktown, QLD in 1886 where they raised their family.
Between 1904 and 1911, Michael lived in Cooktown, QLD working as a Gold Miner and serving with 1 Battalion Kennedy Infantry Regiment (Service Nos: 31/222) as a Private through to Colour Sergeant. In February 1912 Michael was attending the 3rd Special School of Instruction in Albury, NSW when he was seconded to the Military Forces of the Commonwealth Australian Instructional Corps. He served as a Staff Sergeant Major and Warrant Officer (Service No: QP 167) - Instructional Staff (Bombing and Trench Warfare). He married Ivy Myrtle Drew (born 1895 in Mt Morgan, QLD) in 1915 in Brisbane, QLD and continued service with the Australian Instructional Corps.
From January 1918 to July 1919, Michael served with the AIF as a Lieutenant (Service No: QP167) with 41 Battalion in Suez, France and Belgium. This appointment was terminated in 1919, and Michael re-enlisted with the Permanent Military Force Australian Instructional Corps (Service No: 9933) as a Warrant Officer (14 November 1919), 11th (Mixed) Brigade (1 March 1923), Small Arms School (1 July 1924) and as Temporary Adjutant Quartermaster with 56 Battalion (1 October 1936).
Michael, then an Hon Captain, was on leave on 3 April 1941 when he was recalled for active service with the AMF. In 1942 he was promoted to Major, and attached to Officers' Training School, Bonegilla. Michael's service terminated on 30 November 1947.
Michael and Ivy remained in Maroubra, Sydney in NSW, where Michael died in 1968 and Ivy in 1976.
