Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.

87 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 29th January 1934, Quartermaster Sergeant Francis (Frank) Bernard Coleman, Anzac Mounted Division Ordnance (Reg No-3478), commercial traveller from Cotton Street, Sandgate, Queensland and 2 Pell Street, Merewether, New South Wales, father of three, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. CATHOLIC 1-28. 29.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 11th October 1870 to James and Mary Coleman; husband of Jessie Mary Coleman nee Thomson (married 1905, Redfern, N.S.W., died 1964, 30 years a widow) of 2 Ordnance Street, The Hill, New South Wales, Frank enlisted June 1915 with the 15th Battalion at Brisbane, QLD.

Admitted to hospital 27.9.1916 (chronic nephritis, dilatory action of heart), Frank returned home December 1916 being medically unfit, and was discharged on the 14th February 1917.

Mr Coleman’s name has been inscribed on the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll (photo, unveiled on the 9th March 1919, 160 names inscribed, located at St Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton, N.S.W.) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Frank’s gravesite to honour his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Service record states “Died after Discharge, 28.1.1934”.

Descendants should note that Frank would probably be officially commemorated with a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque at the New South Wales Garden of Remembrance, Rookwood, Sydney.
Lest We Forget.
