John Leith Miller was born in Williamstown Victoria on the 30.7.1893. He had previously served with the school cadets when he enlisted at Perth on the 18.1.16, aged 22 years 1 month. He was a clerk and Presbyterian. Next of kin was his widowed mother Emily Miller, of 24 High St, Fremantle. John was described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a chest measurement of 30 – 33 inches, sallow complexion, grey eyes and dark hair. He was a Private with Service Number 251 in the 44th Infantry Battalion. John embarked at Fremantle on the 6.6.16 and disembarked at Plymouth on the 21.7.16. John proceeded to France on the 25.11.16 and was wounded in action on the 28.3.17. He received a severe gunshot wound to his chest and was evacuated to England on the 15.4.17. He returned to Australia per A24 Benalla on the 17.10.17 and was discharged on the 8.11.17. After the war, he married Annabel Vera Henderson, and they had two sons. Tragically, one was born and died in 1923. The family home was in Kalamunda, but John died in Hollywood Repatriation Hospital on the 19.12.1951, aged 58.
