Leading Aircraftman Desmond Francis Hickley (Service No:156096) enlisted in the RAAF on 28 June 1944 as an Aircraftman I (mustered as a Trainee). On 8 July 1945 he was promoted to LAC (mustered as Flight Rigger) and on 21 June 1946 embarked per Westralia for Yokohama, Japan where he served with 76 Squadron 81 Wing. LAC Hickey was attached to Station HQ Laverton at Discharge on 22 January 1948.

The youngest of nine children, Desmond was born  in 1924 in Melbourne, Victoria to John Patrick Cyril Hickey (b1875 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Mary Ellen Stewart (b1880 in Port Fairy, Victoria). John (a Traveller) and Mary married in  1905 in Melbourne, Victoria where they settled and raised their children and John worked as a Traveller, Salesman and Agent.

Desmond worked as a Process Worker prior to enlisting in WWII, and was a Labourer in Melbourne in 1950 when he married Marion Therese Hardy (b1928 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Marion was a Dressmaker in Melbourne. Desmond and Marion settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Desmond worked as a Labourer and Salesman. Desmond died in 2007 and Marion in 2015.
