Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
91 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 5th November 1930, Warrant Officer, 2nd Class Frederick John English, 4th Battalion, Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force, Special Tropical Corps (Reg No-857), labourer from Moate Street, Georgetown, New South Wales, father of four, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 24 NW. 11.
Born at Wickham, New South Wales on the 20th December 1876 to Charles and Elizabeth English; husband of Margaret Ellen English nee Ford (married 1898, Waratah, N.S.W., died?), Frederick enlisted September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Frederick returned home September 1919, being discharged on the 29th November 1919.
Mr. English’s name has been inscribed on the Waratah Superior Public School Roll of Honour (unveiled on the 9th October 1915, 34 names originally inscribed, 74 names now inscribed), Waratah-St. John's Presbyterian Church Honour Roll and the Tighes Hill Public School Honor Roll.
Unfortunately, Frederick’s name has not been inscribed on the family headstone with his daughters (Leila May, born 1899, died 1899) and Vera (born 1900, died 1905) and Alice May (born 1908, died 1908 -no funeral notice located, name not inscribed on headstone) who are sleeping here. Daughter Alma T (born 1906, died?), so January 2017 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
