Private Mervyn William Von Baer (Service No:V125228) enlisted in the Army on 9 January 1940 and was attached to 29th Battalion. Private Von Baer served with HQ 4 Australian Base Sub Area in the SWPR (New Guinea and Borneo - Lae, Bougainville, Buna and Torokina) and was Discharged on 2 April 1946.

Merv was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1919, second of three children of Stanley Clifford Von Baer (b1890 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Elsie Hellings (b1896 in Melbourne, Victoria). Stan and Elsie married in 1916 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Stan was a Labourer.

Merv worked as a Labourer for Caulfield Wholesale Wood Supplies before enlisting in the Army in 1940. Following his Discharge, Merv returned to Melbourne and employment as a Labourer and Clerk. In 1965 in Melbourne, Merv was working as a Clerk when he married Myrtle Elizabeth Marjorie Fellows (b1919 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Myrtle had started work as a Match Hand and was a Factory Inspectoress when she married. Merv and Myrtle settled in Melbourne - Merv worked as a Storeman and Clerk and Myrtle as a Factory Inspectoress. Merv died in 1975 and Myrtle in 1981.
