Quiet and dignified.
"Barney" Hutton taught me German briefly at Geelong Grammar School in the late 60's. He radiated a calm and private demeanor, and we knew he had done something "big" in the war...as i remember the legend it was the abduction of a Wehrmacht general in his own staff car, and safe transport to Allied lines for interrogation. Barney was not about to tell us anything. He would have held up well himself had the tables been turned, I suspect.
The MBE remains a mystery to us, and in fact I don't think we had any idea he had one.
Perhaps one of his descendants could fill in the many gaps in our knowledge of this intensely private man.
My German skills remain a work in progress thanks to Barney and "Herr Bechley"!
