SIDNEY WALTER PUCKETT
SIDNEY WALTER PUCKETT (1893-1938) born at Yass, son of John and Edith Puckett nee Davis. Sidney enlisted in the AIF to serve in WW1 as Private No 1958, 35th Battalion on February 16th, 1916. His unit sailed from Sydney on board the HMAT Barambah A37 on June 23rd, 1916, arriving in Plymouth on August 25th, 1916. We have found at least two cousins, William Travers Jones and Donald Ivan McCoullough serving in the same battalion. He arrived in France in September 1916. He was attached to the 9th Field Coy. Engineers. Had a brief stay in an English hospital in August 1918 before boarding the Demosthenes for his return journey on January 16th, 1919 after serving three years and 57 days in total, with two years and 257 days being served abroad. He was discharged on April 13th, 1919. He returned to Yass suffering from the effects of a Mustard Gas attack on the Western Front. In March 1919 the Grand United Order of Oddfellows, Yass, wrote to the army requesting a certificate to that the Lodge could receive his sickpay. His subsequent death in the Kenmore Repatriation General Hospital in Goulburn, was a direct result of the gas. He received the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
