Warrant Officer II John Henry Pearce (Service No:NX14333) enlisted in the Army on 8 May 1940 as a Private with HQ 20th Infantry Brigade - Specialist Group III Clerk. Private Pearce served in the Middle East (19 November 1940 - 26 January 1942) and was a Warrant Officer II when he served in New Guinea (28 March 1943 - 20 July 1944). WO Pearce was hospitalised with Maalaria, and was Discharged (Medically Unfit) on 20 July 1944. Two of his siblings also served in WWII - older brother William Tobin Pearce (Service No:NX56410) and younger brother Oswald James Pearce OAM, MiD (Service No:NX3333).

Born in 1910 in Penrith NSW, Joe was fourth of six children of William Henry Pearce (b1869 in Northern Ireland) and Venus Wilhelmina Plummer (b1879 in Sydney, NSW). William immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1878, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Erato, and was a Railways Inspector in Penrith when he and Venus married in 1903. William and Venus lived in Penrith and Sydney where they raised their family and William worked for NSW Government Railways as an Inspector and Superintendent.

Joe joined the Public Service in Sydney as a Clerk, and in 1940 was an Accounts Officer when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge in 1944, Joe was in Sydney, NSW in 1947 when he married Joan Mary Madden (nee McNamee; b1910 in Sydney, NSW) - Joan, a Widow, had worked in Sydney as a Nurse. Joe and Joan settled in Sydney, NSW where they raised their family and Joe worked as a Public Servant. Joan died in 1993 and Joe in 2001.
