Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Lieutenant Stanley Russell Gallacher (Service No:VX57807) enlisted in the Army on 26 August 1941 as a Private and was attached to Australian Army Services Corps (AASC) Training Depot. Private Gallacher served in the Middle East (2 November 1941 to 25 March 1942) - in 1942 he wrote home from Palestine 'After arrival we moved in to a camp somewhere near Palestine. At present I am attached to a supply depot, and as it has been in my line of work back home I have found it very interesting. My work consists of checking supplies into this depot and issuing it out again to those responsible for the delivery' (Portland Guardian; Mon 2 Feb 1942; p1). He was attached to 1 Australian Provost Company when he was promoted to Corporal on 2 April 1942 and then to Sergeant in 1943. In 1944 he was appointed to a commissioned rank and served as Lieutenant with Australian Army Amenities Service and HQ 17th Infantry Brigade. Lieutenant Gallacher served in New Guinea (24 November 1944 to 16 July 1945) and was attached to HQ 17th Infantry Brigade at Discharge on 15 April 1946.

Born in Hamilton, Victoria in 1900, Stanley was eldest of six children (and only son) of John McLean Gallacher (b1866 in Hamilton, Victoria) and Emma Payne (b1870 at Muddy creek via Hamilton, Victoria). John was a Labourer in Hamilton when he and Emma married in 1899. They lived in Eccles and MacArthur where they raised their family and John was a Labourer and Farmer before settling in Hamilton in the 1920s.

Stanley worked in Warracknabeal as a Farm Labourer and in 1924 in Portland he married Olive Isabel Collins (b1901 in Nhill, Victoria). In 1925 Stanley and Olive were in Melbourne where Stanley was a Police Constable, before settling in Portland in 1934. Stanley was a Storekeeeper/grocer in Portland and following Olive's death in 1966, he remarried in 1970 to Sylvia May Hutchinson (nee Redfern; b1905 in Narrawong, Victoria) - Sylvia had worked as a Dressmaker in Portland. Sylvia died in 1975 and Stanley in 1978.
