Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Archibald (Arch) Lillico Reg. No 5633 was born in Narrandera NSW in 1882. The family moved to
Warragul in 1890 and Arch was found to be living in Korumburra in 1909 working as a grocer. He
married Sarah Greener in 1911. He is believed to have been working in the Wooreen area prior to
enlisting at the age of 33. It is possible that he was leasing land in the area, as a clearing sale of his
livestock and dairy equipment was held 3rd April 1916 at the Cross Roads Sale Yards Allambee
following his enlistment.

Arch enlisted 17/2/1916 in 23rd Battalion, 15th Reinforcement, describing himself as
a carpenter; his wife Sarah was living in Princes Street, Korumburra. Arch was
discharged 18/6/1915 from 2 Coy Seymour, medically unfit having become well
during initial training. Arch re-enlisted 29/4/1916, departing for England 25/9/1916
and being deployed to France 18/12/1916. He was wounded in Action May 1917
(GSH left leg) and upon return to duty in France in October 1917 was one of 4
soldiers awarded the Military Medal on 14th October 1917 for bravery in the field for
'Work near Broodseinde on 9 October 1917.' - . “Stretcher bearers who worked with
tireless energy, dragged and carried away wounded many times when exposed to
heavy enemy shell and Machine Gun fire during the attack on 9.10.17. Their
courageous conduct was invaluable, and they showed conspicuous gallantry and
disregard of personal danger in searching forward area for wounded men”. Arch
survived the war, returning home in August 1919. He died in Korumburra in 1972.
