Arthur Hinchmore was the son of Mr. William and Louise Mary Hinchmore of Latrobe, Tasmania.
Arthur Hinchmore enlisted during 1914 in the 15th Battalion and was present at the Anzac landing on 25 April 1915. He was wounded a little over a week later and was evacuated to England with a gunshot wound to the scalp. He rejoined his unit at Gallipoli on 6 September 1915 and was evacuated sick just before the evacuation.
Arthur transferred to the 4th Pioneer Battalion during the reorganisation of the AIF during early 1916. He went through a lot of fighting on the Western Front, being slightly wounded during June 1917. He transferred back to the 15th Battalion in early 1918. He was wounded, badly gassed, during late August 1918, and again evacuated to England. He was returned to Australia in late 1918, because he was a 1915 soldier.
Arthur’s older brother, 2704 Private Richard Hinchmore 12th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Mouquet Farm 19-22 August 1916, aged 31.
Another brother, Albert Hinchmore was in New Zealand when the war started and enlisted with the 2nd Battalion Auckland Regiment, NZEF. Albert was also killed in action on 1 August 1917, near Messines in Belgium.
