88 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 23rd July 1932 (3 funerals on this day), Colonel George Robert Short (V.D.), 17th Battalion Headquarters, bank manager from Commercial Bank, Newcastle, New South Wales and Barker Street, The Hill, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 71. ANGLICAN 2-119. 29.

Born at Paddington, New South Wales on the 19th May 1861 to William and Elizabeth Short, George enlisted April 1915 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Lt Col Short’s name has been inscribed on the St. Phillip's Presbyterian Church (Newcastle) Roll of Honour (unveiled on the 11th July 1915), 3rd Australian Garrison Artillery Roll of Honour (unveiled date unknown, proudly displayed at the Fort Scratchley Military Museum, Nobbys Road, N.S.W.) and the Mayfield Masonic Lodge St George No-78 Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled date possibly 11th July 1916, whereabouts unknown).
