Biography contributed by Trevor Pyatt

William Whelan

Born: about 1 August 1871, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England

Died: 29 October 1949, Daws Road Hospital, Springbank, South Australia

Buried: West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide (AIF Section)

Occupation: Labourer; later Cartman

Military Service: Private, Australian Imperial Force (WWI), Service No. 1755, 48th Battalion

Parents

William Whelan was born into a large working-class Irish-Catholic family in Scarborough, Yorkshire.

Father: William Whelan (1832–1898), labourer, died at Scarborough
Mother: Mary Ann Whelan (née Deane) (1839–1927), died at Scarborough

William appears as an infant in the 1871 England Census and again with his family at 18 Sussex Street, Scarborough, in the 1881 Census, confirming his parentage and early residence.

Early Life in England

William grew up in Scarborough alongside several siblings, experiencing early family loss with the deaths of two younger siblings in childhood. By his late teens and early twenties, he entered military life, later declaring prior British service of:

12 years with the Durham Light Infantry
1 year with the Imperial Yeomanry (South Africa)
This prior service almost certainly included participation connected to the Second Boer War, marking William as a seasoned soldier well before his Australian enlistment.

Marriage and Family

Around 1898, William married Georgina Margaret Powell (1879–1967) in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. The couple established their family life there before later migrating to Australia.

Migration to Australia

Between 1911 and 1914, William and his family migrated to South Australia, settling in the Port Adelaide / Rosewater district. This move coincided with the birth of their youngest children and William’s later enlistment during World War I.

World War I Service (Australia)

William enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 7 March 1916 at Adelaide, aged 40, despite being married with dependent children.

Service No.: 1755
Rank: Private
Unit: 48th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcements
Embarked: 11 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas
Theatre: Western Front (France)

His service was marked by repeated illness, including jaundice and dysentery, leading to prolonged hospitalisation. He was returned to Australia in March 1918 and medically discharged on 3 May 1918.

Medals:

British War Medal
Victory Medal

William is commemorated on multiple local honour rolls, reflecting both community recognition and family pride in his service.

Later Life and Death

Following the war, William returned to Rosewater, working as a cartman and supporting his family. His health never fully recovered from wartime illness.

He died on 29 October 1949, aged 79.

A death notice in the Adelaide Chronicle (3 November 1949) read in part:

“Loved father of Nora, Alf, Ern and Evelyn… Lest we forget.”

Burial

William Whelan was buried with military recognition at West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, in the AIF Section. His headstone records:

“In Memory of No. 1755, 48th Btn. A.I.F.

Died at Springbank 29th Oct. 1949, aged 79 years.

Remembered by his loving wife and family.

Peacefully sleeping.”

Interpretive Note on Military Service

William Whelan’s military record was exceptional for his era and background. Before settling permanently in Australia, he had already served extensively with the British Army, including approximately twelve years with the Durham Light Infantry and a period with the Imperial Yeomanry, likely connected to imperial service around the time of the South African (Boer) War. Despite being 40 years old, married, and the father of a large family, he again volunteered for active service in World War I, enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force in 1916. He served overseas with the 48th Battalion on the Western Front, enduring the harsh conditions of trench warfare and repeated illness before returning to Australia in 1918. Taken together, William Whelan’s service represents nearly fifteen years of military duty across two armies and two continents, placing him well outside the experience of the average World War I soldier and marking him as a career serviceman whose life bridged Britain’s imperial forces and Australia’s wartime contribution.
