Leonard was the fourth of seven children of Henry Charles Mills (b1895 in Greenhills, WA) and Francis Maud Bishop (b1892 in York, WA). Henry (a Farm Hand) and Francis married in 1914 in Greenhills, WA where they settled and raised their family.

Leonard was a Farmer in Greenhills WA in 1942 when he enlisted in the Australian Army (Private; Service Nos:WX36326/W51600) in Port Moresby, New Guinea. He was atatched to C Australian Heavy Battery when he was Discharged in June 1946.

Following his Discharge, Leonard returned to Greenhills where he worked as a Farmer before relocating to Rocky Gully near Mount Barker WA in 1954. He soon married Audrey Jean and they settled at Rocky Gully where Leonard was a Farmer - the Lenaud Arabian Stud. He died in 1994 and Audrey in 2015.
