John left Australia on the Invernia with the 28th Battalion for Gallipoli on 4 September 1915. He was severely wounded in the thigh, arm and back in action on 5 June 1916 and was admitted to No. 8 Casualty Clearing Station prior to being sent to hospital at Wimereux, France. John was then admitted to Norfolk War Hospital in England on 12 June. He proceeded to France rejoining his battalion on 18 July 1917 after extensive treatment for his wounds.
John was again wounded in action in Belgium on 20 September 1917 when he was shot in the right thigh and sustained a fractured femur. He was sent to Wimereux Hospital in France and then to the Ionic Stationary Auxiliary Hospital in England for further treatment. His injuries were such that he was returned to Australia on the Karoola on 23 July 1918 and discharged on 29 March.

John Joseph Wood, nicknamed Jack was born 31st January 1878 in Mount Torrens, South Australia. Son of Emma Jane Wood nee Lyne (1844-1930) and Henry Charles Wood (1984-1900).

He enlisted when he was 37 years old on 4th May 1915 in Perth Western Australia.

His service included Gallipolli, Egypt, France and Belgium and although he was wounded in action more than once, he returned safely to Australia.

Jack died at the age of 67 on 18th January 1948 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. His ashes were interred at Karrakatta Cemetery and Crematorium, Rose Gardens-Wall J-0147.
