Don was the fifth of ten children of William Henry Leng (b1858 at Kellor Plains, Victoria) and Lucy Hillgrove (b1858 in Castlemaine, Victoria). William - a Farmer - and Lucy married in 1880 in Castlemaine and settled in Laen, Minyip, Victoria to raise their family.
Don was a Farmer at Laen, Minyip in March 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. He served as a Private (Service No:511) with 39th Infantry Battalion - and as a Lance Corporal from November 1917 to April 1918, reverting to Private at his own request. Don was WiA in France in January 1917, and remained with his Battalion. He was Discharged in September 1919.
Returning to Laen, Don was a Labourer in 1921 when he married Elsie Mary Paynter (b1895 at Watchem near Donald, Victoria) - Elsie was a Teacher at Lallat in the Wimmera. Don and Elsie settled in Minyip where Don was a Radio Dealer/Agent before relocating to Rupanyup, Murtoa where they spent the 1930s. Don and Elsie lived in Melbourne during the 1940s and 1950s, where Don was a Labourer. They moved to Geelong when Don retired in the late 1950s. Don died in 1972 and Elsie in 1973.
