HORACE HENRY McKEOWN, son of Mr. William and Mrs. Jessie McKeown, was born at Forest Lodge, Sydney, on 26th February, 1893.

He was educated at the Fort Street High School and Knox College, North Sydney, and joined the service of the Bank at Head Office on 10th February, 1910.

Horace McKeown enlisted in July, 1915, and joined the 7th Light Horse Regiment as second-lieutenant.

He embarked for active service in November, 1915, and on reaching Egypt was engaged in defensive operations and in action against the Senussi with the 7th Light Horse Regiment and a special force. Leaving Egypt in June he proceeded to France and was attached to the 42nd Battery (4th Divisional Artillery) and Divisional Ammunition Column. He continued to serve with the artillery until the Armistice, and in the meantime was promoted to the rank of first-lieutenant in October, 1916, and to that of captain in October, 1918. He returned to Australia a year later.
