Leading Aircraftman Athol Charles Gray (Service No:88062) initially served in the ACMF (Service No:T101806) as a Private with General Details Depot from 7 August 1942 before enlisting in the RAAF on 12 August 1942 at No 6 Recruiting Centre Hobart as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Flight Rigger. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 11 July 1943, LAC Gray served with No 4 Squadron and was attached to 1 Operational Training School at Discharge on 6 July 1945.

Athol was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1923, eldest of eight children of Gordon Philip Gray (aka Watchorn; b1907 in Swansea, Tasmania) and Edith Evelyn Dove (b1908 in Hobart, Tasmania). Gordon was a Police Constable in Swansea when he and Edith married at Sandy Bay in 1928. They lived in Queenborough and Hobart where they raised their family and Gordon was a Police Constable.

Athol started a Bricklaying Apprenticeship in 1938 at Sandy Bay with RJ Barwick, and was a Bricklayer in Hobart in 1942 when he enlisted. In 1945 in Melbourne, Athol married Naomi (Noni) Joy Huxley (b1922 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Noni had also served in the RAAF (Service No:90879). Athol and Noni settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Athol was a Bricklayer. By the early 1960s they had settled in Franklin, Tasmania where Athol worked as a Bricklayer. Athol died in 1994 and Noni in 2016.
